The Bench Standard
The jewelry industry hides its flaws under high wattage showroom lights. We turn those lights off. We pull out the loupe. You cannot judge a piece by its marketing campaign. You judge it by the symmetry of the gallery wire, the tension in the prongs, and the porosity of the casting.
Most online reviews just aggregate brand press releases. We rip that script apart. We put metal and stone under literal microscopes to find out what you are actually buying.
A shiny finish hides a lazy jeweler.
We built this review process because consumers get scammed by bad prong settings, hollowed out bands, and fake alloys every single day. We exist to find the friction. We break down the craftsmanship. We show you exactly where your money goes.
How We Choose What to Put on the Bench
We ignore the noise. We target the signal. Our selection process focuses on three specific categories. First, direct to consumer brands claiming heirloom quality at wholesale prices. Second, custom design houses pushing high volume CAD production. Third, the bench tools marketed to independent jewelers.
We buy the pieces. We source the tools. We test the claims.
We never accept free items in exchange for a favorable write up. If a brand demands copy approval, we drop them immediately. We only review items that real people actually buy and wear.
The Forensic Breakdown
Our evaluation protocol relies on strict, repeatable bench tests. We look past the polish to expose the structural reality of every piece.
- Alloy Verification. We run pieces through XRF machines to check elemental composition. If a brand claims solid gold, we verify the exact ratio. We catch the cheap fillers.
- Setting Integrity. We inspect prong symmetry under high magnification. We check for burr marks, uneven seats, and floating stones. A diamond that shifts is a diamond you will lose.
- Casting Density. We look for surface porosity and hidden hollows. We weigh pieces against their stated specs. We find the corners they cut to save a few grams of gold.
- Finish Quality. We check the hard to reach areas. The inside of the band. The underside of the basket. Lazy polishing leaves rough spots that irritate the skin and trap dirt.
The Reality of Bench Time
You cannot test a ring in an afternoon. We commit to a minimum thirty day wear cycle for any consumer jewelry piece. We want to see how the metal reacts to daily friction. We watch for rhodium plating wearing thin. We check if the prongs catch on fabric.
For bench tools, we run them through a full production cycle. We set at least fifty stones with a new graver before we write a single word about it.
Three weeks of testing. Zero shortcuts. Real results.
The Blind Spots We Refuse to Cover
Trust requires boundaries. We draw hard lines around our coverage. We do not review cheap base metal jewelry. If it turns your finger green by design, it does not belong on our bench.
We do not cover metaphysical crystal properties. We evaluate stones for hardness, clarity, cut. We leave the energy healing to someone else.
We also refuse to review unbranded inventory from overseas drop shippers. The quality varies wildly from batch to batch. A review of a drop shipped ring becomes useless the moment the factory changes hands.
Who Holds the Loupe
I am Raquel Kohn. I am a Diamond and Gem Setter at Artemer Studio. I spend my days at the bench. I set stones, repair broken prongs, and fix the mistakes other jewelers make.
I know what a secure bezel feels like. I know the exact sound a graver makes when it bites into properly alloyed gold. I do not write theory. I write from the operational reality of the jeweler bench.
When I tell you a setting is weak, it is because I have rebuilt hundreds just like it.
Keeping the Record Straight
Manufacturing standards drift. A brand that produced flawless work last season will sometimes switch casting houses to save money. We monitor the complaints. We watch the forums.
When we see a spike in customer issues regarding a brand we previously recommended, we buy a new piece. We run the tests again. If the quality dropped, we update the review immediately. We strip the recommendation.
We hold them accountable.
